Our Breeds

At Vredesig, we pride ourselves on raising sheep that combine exceptional genetics, health, and performance. By maintaining both Dormer and Suffolk stock, we provide our clients with the flexibility to meet their specific goals. For high-yield meat production with efficient feed conversion, Dormers offer early-maturing lambs, excellent carcass quality, and consistent wool as a secondary product. For rapid turnover and commercial meat operations, Suffolks deliver quick growth, dependable lambing, and reliable carcass performance. This dual-breed offering allows you to choose stock that aligns with your farm, land, climate, and business objectives — whether your focus is stud-quality stock, lamb production, or a combination of wool and meat yield. Why Dormer stands out

Dormer

The Dormer breed was developed in South Africa by crossing Dorset Horn rams with German Merino ewes — created specifically to thrive in the cold, wet winter‑rainfall conditions of the Western Cape.

Muscular build & meat yield

Dormers are well‑muscled with a strong frame and produce high-quality carcasses. Their lambs grow fast and efficiently, often reaching market-ready weight at a young age.

High fertility & mothering ability

Known for easy lambing, good mothering instincts, and the ability to produce twins or multiples. Dormer ewes often lamb with minimal complications and raise healthy lambs.

Adaptable and efficient

Originally bred for tough winter-rainfall conditions, Dormers are now successful across much of South Africa. They adapt well to pasture grazing or feedlot systems, and convert feed efficiently into muscle — reducing production costs.

Dual benefit

While primarily a meat sheep, Dormers also produce a white wool fleece (about 3.5 – 5 kg per sheep, ~27 micron) free of kemp or coloured fibres — making them a flexible choice where wool is a secondary benefit.
Why Suffolk is a top choice

Suffolk

The Suffolk is a well-known meat breed globally and appreciated in South Africa for its reliability and efficiency. At Vredesig, our Suffolk sheep are selected for strong performance, good health, and dependable lambing — a reliable backbone for commercial operations or stud breeding alike.

Rapid growth & early maturity

Suffolk lambs mature early and can be market-ready at a young age — some reaching suitable weight from as early as 9–12 weeks. This makes them highly efficient for producers looking for quick turnover.

Strong maternal traits

Suffolk ewes are known for good mothering instincts and generally have easy births. Their maternal drive helps ensure lamb survival and healthy growth.

Reliable meat production

Their carcass quality and consistent growth make them a dependable breed for meat-focused operations.

Adaptable and practical

Suffolk sheep perform well under various grazing and pasture conditions. Their robustness and ease of management make them suitable for commercial flocks.
